Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine Maria Madre delle Grazie (the Charterhouse)
The church dedicated to Holy Mary of the Graces and the adjacent monastery were founded by the Duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti who wanted to build a grandiose funeral monument for himself and his family. Access to the interior which is administrated by the Carthusian friars is by a single entrance aligned with the tree-lined avenue. The visitor then passes into the great courtyard with a lawn in front of the striking facade of the church which is actually unfinished at the top. A blend of Gothic and Renaissance elements create geometric shapes and intersections in marble which emphasise the architectural divisions. Along the south side of the courtyard there is the Ducal Palace, the historic summer residence of the Visconti-Sforza dynasty and the guest quarters for high-ranking visitors which is now the Museum of the Charterhouse. The facade was altered in the 17th century by the French architect Francesco Maria Richini and now has a linear succession of windows between half-columns which give a luminous elegant touch to the entire structure.loc.
