Centrale Taccani power station

TrAd.5

The hydroelectric power station in Trezzo, commissioned by Cristoforo Benigno Crespi, the proprietor of the textiles mill in Crespi d’Adda, was designed to blend into its surroundings without any jarring notes. The architect Gaetano Moretti and engineer Adolfo Covi who was responsible for the technical aspects therefore created a building that is one of a kind, combining technological innovation with a sophisticated decorative language that draws heavily on the eclectic and Art Nouveau styles. This striving for beauty in form is evident in elements of chinoiserie such as the wrought iron lamps and confirms the Taccani power station as one of the high points in the movement to mediate between engineering and architecture, art and technology. It was built out of concrete – a material that was still rarely used in Italy at the turn of the 20th century – but coated by silts from the river. Its irregular crown is reminiscent of the battlements of the castle above it while the openings and niches in the monumental facade recall the natural features of the rock. The layout of the building with its two asymmetrical wings and protruding central block reflect the interior floorplan. The control room is in the centre with a long turbine wing on the left and the steam engine wing on the right.
