Church of San Zenone

Ver.1

The parish church is dedicated to San Zenone. It was initially built as the private chapel of some Lombard lord with a particular devotion for the saint. The present building dates back to the 17th century and hides the remains of the more ancient edifice. During excavation to install central heating the foundations of an older Lombard basilica were discovered and these had been built using the rubble of a previous Roman settlement. It is likely that it was built in the 9th century and the decorations date to the 10th or 11th centuries. The architect who designed the facade of the modern day church was Fabio Mangone and he mixed the typical richness of the Baroque period with more rigorous and austere elements in the classical style.
