Vellutificio Visconti di Modrone Velvet Factory

The factory, which was founded in 1839 for spinning and twisting cotton by the company Sioli Dell’Acqua, became the property of the Archintos in 1858 and, seven years later, the Visconti di Modrone family. It was they who created the Velvis brand. The Viscontis introduced technical improvements which were far ahead of their time, starting with the steam power station. The building is still an imposing structure with its four storeys, tower and battlements, corner towers and air of medieval nobility. The tower concealed a vertical driveshaft which distributed its force to the four floors.
